Graduate Newsletter

  • Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism
    • Early Bird Registration deadline (virtual and in-person): November 20, 2020
    • Conference date: January 8-9
  • Advising – M.S. in Food and Nutrition Services
    • The Winter/Spring course schedule is online. NHM 526, 612, 617 are core courses. NH 623 and 619 are offered and can be your electives. Talk to your advisor to see if there are other courses that can count for your elective.
    • All students in the MS-FNS program must have an advisory committee set up before enrolling in NHM 693, 697, or 699. Your committee chair usually serves as your academic advisor as well and will help you decide your Plan of Study. In graduate school, academic advisors are not “assigned” to you, but you have to “find one and request”. Let me know if you are ready to request an advisor change.
    • If you already have your advisory committee, work on your Plan of Study form with your committee. This needs to happen before you enroll in 693, 697, or 699.
    • If you cannot enroll in any NHM course, talk to the instructor to see if you can be added.
  • Advising – PhD in NHM
    • The Winter/Spring course schedule is online. Talk to your advisor to decide which courses to take. Use the curriculum sheet as a guide.
    • Prospectus defenses or comprehensive exams may occur in the period between semesters, without needing to enroll in dissertation credit hours, as long as you will enroll in the subsequent semester. Make sure there should be a 4 calendar months interval between prospectus and final dissertation defense.
  • Graduate Assistants
    • Although the Fall classes and final exams will be completed on November 24, the GA appointments are supposed to be effective through December 11 (if you only have a semester-long assistantship) or throughout the winter except holidays (if you have a yearlong assistantship). Discuss your winter work arrangements with your supervisor.
  • Graduation
    • If you are graduating this December, please remind me so I can make sure everything is in order. The last day you can submit a thesis or dissertation for December graduation is December 4.
    • Spring graduate assistantships will be entered in the system by November 30. Direct questions to your work supervisor.
  • Deadlines
    • Graduate Student Council Research Grants program has been released. Applications are due January 11. Attend information sessions on 9/27, 11/30, or 12/14. Look for more information on your UM Today.
    • 3MT competition will go virtual this year. The submission deadline is January 21. Look for more information.
