Dr. Nadeeja N. Wijayatunga MD (MBBS), MPhil, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Hospitality Management at the University of Mississippi. She is a physician and nutrition scientist by training. Her current research areas include biobehavioral aspects of obesity and consumer behavior related to food.

Dr. Wijayatunga obtained her PhD in Nutritional Sciences from Texas Tech University. She was awarded the competitive American Heart Association postdoctoral fellowship during her postdoctoral training in the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management at Texas Tech University. During her PhD and postdoc periods, she gained experience in clinical, behavioral and basic science research in obesity.

Dr. Wijayatunga completed her residency in Medicine and Surgery and worked as a physician in Anesthesia/ Intensive Care in Sri Lanka.  Before coming to the United States, she also worked as a faculty in the Department of Biochemistry in the Medical School of University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Sri Lanka.

She is currently the Chair-Elect of the Early Career Nutrition Interest group of the American Society for Nutrition.
