About the Director

David H. Holben, PhD, RDN, LD, FAND, is Professor and Gillespie Distinguished Scholar in the Department of Nutrition and Hospitality Management. He is a registered dietitian nutrition and former commissioned officer in the United States Army Medical Specialist Corps (Reserve Component, 65C IMA, MAJ).

Dr. Holben completed his doctoral studies at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.  Building upon a clinical nutrition and basic science background, his research focuses on food insecurity and health outcomes of individuals in North America. Exploring the relationship of dietary patterns and diabetes, obesity, and other conditions to food and nutrition security across the lifespan and optimizing solutions for food and nutrition security to promote health and wellness are of particular interest.

Dr. Holben is the senior author of Position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Food Insecurity in the United States and has authored or coauthored numerous papers on the topic.
